During the Cold War, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea was considered a potential front involving American and Soviet Naval task forces. The Israeli Navy also clashed with those of Egypt and Syria.
But now the picture is much more complicated: the main problem being Turkish policy under President Recep Tayip Erdogan, who has alienated Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Egypt in a dispute over sovereignty and energy.
As an aside, there are also Israeli and Lebanese claims and counter claims regarding a gas-rich corner of their common maritime boundary.
