The Eastern Mediterranean, which was relatively tranquil over the last several decades, has recently become a bone of contention and a hotbed of activity.
Three major centers of attention are Syria and its neighbors, Turkey to its north and Lebanon to its south and west.
Turkey has adopted a militant position vis-a-vis the exploration and exploitation of undersea resources in areas in dispute between it and Greece. And Lebanon is reported to drag its feet in the talks with Israel on demarcating their maritime boundary.
