Description

“Immigrant Songs” is a meditation on movement: how different people and things travel, integrate, break apart, and re-form in new groups; how movement and immigration can be both difficult and rewarding; and finally how immigration can add to each and every culture in our world.

In part this is influenced by mcthfg’s own migration to South Korea in 2009, and in part by the consideration of those who have few choices or opportunities about where they live. As a result, at times the tracks are joyful and full of wonder, and at others darker and broodier, with these emotions reflected in the different time signatures and instrumentation used.

As mcthfg sees it, “Music is an opportunity to share and mix cultures, and for me it helps build a connection between my old homeland and the new. I consider myself extremely lucky in that I’ve been able to meet people from all over the world through music, and I’ve been able to get a glimpse of other ways of living outside my own. I hope that feeling comes across in my music.”
