In vain

I was born with a bible in my hand.
And from the day I walked, I headed for His land.
Just a sucker for the light. Bright and blinding in the night
I say; Today I have turned away from His sight.

I’ve got eyes to see what’s going on.
I’ve got ears to hear in who’s name it is done.
Not for my sisters or by brothers, not for the love of one another
but for oil, wealth and power to the few.

Bring the poor bring the hungry and I’ll feed them
Glorious tales of mercy and a little piece of bread
Bring the rich, bring the wealthy, let them pay me. let them pay me.
I will keep them from the wrath of men reclaiming what is theirs.

I have spoken his name in vain
I have sung it in praise, now I’m ashamed.
For the good Lord of the songs, the God in which poor folks
put their hope and their faith in is all gone.

Bring the poor bring the hungry and I’ll feed them
Glorious tales of mercy and a little piece of bread
Bring the rich bring the wealthy, let them pay me, let them pay me.
I will keep them from the wrath of men reclaiming what is theirs.
