Referent: Peter Hudis, Professor of Humanities and Philosophy at Oakton Community College
Frantz Fanon (1926-61) was a philosopher, psychiatrist, and revolutionary activist who is widely considered one of the most important theorists on race and racism. A rebirth of interest in his ideas is underway today in response to the ongoing debates and protests over police abuse in the U.S., the European refugee crisis, and the impact of neo-colonialism upon the developing world. This talk will explore both his view of how racism thwarts mutual recognition as well as his understanding of the pathway to overcome social and racial alienation, in light of the specific realities facing us today.
Peter Hudis is Professor of Humanities and Philosophy at Oakton Community College and author of Frantz Fanon: Philosopher of the Barricades (Pluto, 2015) and Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism (Brill, 2012). He is also General Editor of The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, a projected 14-volume collection (three volumes have appeared so far).
