Well, we broke in today after almost two hours. I wanted you to see clearly what was the objective proof of an unseen reality that brought us into connection with Heaven.

“From that moment I so greatly feared them that I would have received instruction from them no sooner than from a Mahometan. Indeed, I think I would have avoided them at all hazard if about to meet them on the street. I now remembered hearing Dr. Fisk answer the questions of my mother, as to what and how she should believe, ‘Believe,’ said he, ‘that you have it, and you have it.’ I did not then see the difference between ‘believing that you are receiving it, and that will bring it,’ and ‘believing that you have received it, and that will make it a fact that you have received it!’”

What is this standard that we have already attained? I’d never read Philippians 3:16 like this before—with the emphasis on “standard.”

After being exasperated and about to close the meeting today, the Spirit whispered, “John Wesley Redfield” and upon reading the excerpt above and then looking at Philippians 3:16 as a continuation of last week’s message on ἐξανάστασιν from Philippians 3:11, I was finally struck by the connection between Redfield’s, “Believe,” said he, “that you have it, and you have it,” and 3:16, “That we have already attained.” The Spirit then bore witness!

There is also a connection between Philippians 3:11 (ἐξανάστασιν) and Romans 1:4 (ἐξ ἀναστάσεως.)
‘In contrast to previous translations, our translation of the preposition ἐκ in Rom 1:4 seems to accommodate more precisely the temporal meaning of the passage: Rom 1:4: τοῦ ὁρισθέντος υἱοῦ θεοῦ ἐν δυνάμει κατὰ πνεῦμα ἁγιωσύνης ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν "He was constituted Son of God in full force according to the Spirit of holiness / Holy Spirit, from his resurrection from death." In line with W. Hill, with this translation we attempt to transmit more precisely Paul’s idea that divine filiation, vested on Jesus "in full power", was not "the result of" the resurrection, nor did it take place "by means of" the resurrection; rather, divine filiation is inaugurated "at the moment" of his resurrection.

In this sense, according to Paul, Jesus’s investiture with full power cannot depend on the resurrection, nor be an effect of it (= causal value). Similarly, resurrection is not a means to the investiture (= instrumental value). The syntagma ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν indicates only a fact, and it does so emphatically, since, as we have seen, ἐκ indicates the initial moment in a lapse of time more intensely than does the preposition ἀπό.”
