David was working for the NFL when he popped in to talk about All Crazee Now, his book on English football in the 1970s. He has now retired to concentrate on his other career as a sportswriter and he brings a biography of Don Howe to the Library.
Howe played at full-back for West Brom for a decade, then moved to Arsenal where his playing career was curtailed by a broken leg. He moved into coaching and eventually became Arsenal manager in the mid-1980s. He was assistant manager at Wimbledon when the Crazy Gang won the FA Cup and returned to Arsenal to work at the Academy in the Wenger Era.
Howe was a reliable member of the national team’s coaching staff under Greenwood, Robson and Venables. David calls him English Football’s Greatest Coach, the ‘hero in the shadows’.
