The Beautiful Game and the Ugly Truth is certainly one of the most depressing books about football to have been written in recent years.
Hartlepool fan Kieran lost his grandfather to dementia and has been part of the Mail’s Enough Is Enough campaign to draw attention to the illness as it affects former footballers. These include Mike Sutton, father of Chris, whose Mail column Kieran ghostwrites and who is one of the big campaigners for more awareness of the disease.
In the book, Kieran talks to widows and children of players. He also chronicles the efforts of doctors to investigate the effects of CTE (formerly known as dementia pugilistica) and the footballing authorities who shamefully stood in their way.
