In his three picaresque books travelling to watch football and its watchers, Mat has taken his love of Southampton and Salisbury FC and extrapolated it to the minnows of football. Key themes on every page of his work include ‘pride, passion, belonging, identity and hope’, whether it is falling in love with Accrington Stanley in his first book Another Bloody Saturday or finding out what happened to a youth football team in Palestine who were wearing his old football shirts in Minnows United.
