All My Own Words is as ironic a title for Neil’s memoir as you can get: in 2014 he was ejected from his job covering tennis for The Times after quoting vast unattributed chunks of other writers’ work in a hastily written book for the Wimbledon tennis championships.
Happily, his book on Wycombe Wanderers called Close Quarters rivals Family by Mike Calvin as the seminal ‘embedded journalist’ text. Neil used his experience as a football writer for the Daily Mail and in local news to gain the trust of manager Gareth Ainsworth and several members of the Chairboys squad.
