This is a one-hour documentary that traces the path of a 911 call in Oakland, introducing listeners to the people who work within the emergency response system and to the residents who depend on it. Along the way, listeners will meet Lesley Philips and Sharena Thomas, founders of The People's Community Medics, a group of residents from East and West Oakland who say 911 doesn't come as fast to their neighborhoods. They trained themselves and their neighbors in basic first aid so that they could do something to keep people alive while they waited for help.
