Deputy Minister Mashego- Dlamini to conduct Political Consultations with Mauritania

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Candith Mashego-Dlamini, will travel to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to conduct Political Consultations with her counterpart the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and for the Mauritanians Abroad, from 18 to 19 December 2023.

Diplomatic relations between South Africa and Mauritania were established in 1995. Mauritania opened an Embassy in Pretoria in 2006 and South Africa reciprocated in February 2008.

South Africa and Mauritania met for bilateral consultations in Mauritania in June 2011 at Senior Officials’ level. The former Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane paid an official visit to Mauritania in August 2015 and signed two bilateral agreements: An Agreement Establishing a Joint Commission for Cooperation between the two countries and an Agreement on Regular Bilateral Consultations.

The purpose of the visit is to enhance and strengthen bilateral relations between South Africa and Mauritania with the view to deepen trade and investment relations, to cooperate closely with Mauritania on issues of peace and security on the African Continent and to promote the primacy of the United Nations in the system of global governance through which current challenges facing the international community should be addressed.
It is also expected that the mainstreaming of continental development priorities in the African Union, United Nations, SADC as well as other multilateral cooperation objectives will form part of discussions.

In terms of trade relations, South Africa’s major exports to Mauritania include iron and steel, machinery, chemicals, prepared food stuff, plastic and rubber and mineral products, whilst Mauritania’s main exports to South Africa include live animals and products of iron/steel.
