World Book Day is commemorated annually on the 23rd April. The focal point of UNESCO’s World Book Day in 2023 was indigenous languages and the celebration thereof, as far as literature goes. To this end, UNESCO even includes orally shared stories within the concept of books. The idea to Read, Grow, and Inspire is also a call that has been shouted from other quarters with megaphones, particularly by Penguin Random House South Africa. While the issue of books and indigenous languages should be very close to all our hearts as South Africans, so too should be the idea to Read, Grow, Inspire.
