40 young South Africans were selected to the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI) Fellows. The Mandela Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship programme of the US government’s Young African Leaders initiative (YALI). Since 2014, nearly 5 800 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa have participated in the Fellowship. The Fellows between the ages of 25 and 35 are accomplished leaders and have established records of promoting innovating and positive and positive impact in their communities and countries.
Ms Heather Wright, an Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the US Embassy and Ms Murendeni Makhado a YALI and a Certified Professional Natural Scientist employed as an Environmental Manager at a mining company in Polokwane and a member of Women in Mining South Africa (WIMSA—a trade association supporting women in this industry) visited Ubuntu Radio studios to talk about the programme.
