Description

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery (June 19th, 1865) in the United States when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed that slavery had been abolished, 2 years earlier. A great number of those former slaves left immediately to find family members who had been sold away. This day is celebrated with Parades, Cookouts, Discussions and more. This celebration of freedom and family also takes place at a time where families seeking asylum are being torn apart by Trump adminsitration policies aimed at punishing the most vulnerable among us.

We're joined by Chicago Public School Educator Juanita Mahdi, Mental Health Professional Dr. Lamise Shawahin, and Higher Education Leader and Social Justice Advocate Dr Aisha El-Amin to talk about how these two subjects intersect and what must be done to defend the affected children.
