EA Review: Mystic State - My Own Private Island LP
(Ft. Congi, MC Fokus, JFO & Elana Montgomery)
The last track on the vinyl pressing for My Own Private Island is, “Too Late” which features Congi of Chord Marauders. “Too Late” begins mellifluously with the sounds of water droplets panning over a long, drawn out granular pad. These emanating drips are then juxtaposed by the glitched out arrangement of natural and unnatural noises. Through this, the beat develops a natural swing without the use of typical percussive elements to drive the track’s motion. As if taking a breath of air while speaking into a microphone, there is a brief pause before the rich, flowing bassline kicks in. Supported by detuned vocals which fluctuate in pitch every few bars or so, Mystic State melds influences from UK garage with elements of popular rap music in a way that yields itself to both underground and commercial success. Additionally, the synths used provide a deep, vapory atmosphere that completes the thick blanket of sub bass. With compelling chord progressions and elysian arpeggiations, “Too Late” showcases the collaborative talent of both Mystic State and Congi.
