EA Review: Rareman - Tribute / Shibuya Nightz [JUAN003]

While JUAN003’s A side focused on the heavier end of the spectrum, the EP’s second track titled, “Shibuya Nightz'' explores the melodic capacity of dubstep in a manner that’s downright wavy. Right away, arpeggiating synths straight out of an 80’s film are guided by blissful chord progressions that fill the background. Like in “Tribute”, this song delves into the concept of lofi as a hifi medium. Grainy distortion and saturation color the various melodic elements of “Shibuya Nightz'' while vocal samples are used both for creating atmosphere and building tension. The tasteful vocalises that fade in and out of JUAN003’s B track are bolstered by bright hi-hats and cymbals to give the tune an overall energetic and uplifting mood. Brief bursts of distorted percs and one shots are sparsely strewn throughout the song like split moments of consciousness, alluding to the spellbinding effect of Rareman’s powerful production. Despite being considerably mellower than “Tribute”, each drop in “Shibuya Nightz'' oozes with energy through the movement created by its thumping bass and catchy percussion.
