EA Review: Widow - Hoia Baciu EP (DDD067)
Wrapping up this monstrous EP is the sub-heavy, “Serpents Tongue”. Instantaneously, listeners’ ears are met with the diabolical sounds of laughter which is soon followed by another wonderfully spooky vocal sample. As this track lurches to life, the hefty barrage of 808s are supported by the high energy tintinnabulations of the lead piano. This tune contains a lot of very creative uses of sounds to evoke strong Mephistophelian imagery. As was the case with each and every song on Hoia Baciu, Widow masterfully incorporates eccentric samples to create chaos and confusion while simultaneously tying together the EP as a whole. Shifts in energy are executed with precision as Widow builds and sustains pressure through melodic and rhythmic repetition. These periods of intensity are methodically built upon by creating brief flashes of silence akin to the feeling of gasping for air over and over again. In its final seconds, “Serpents Tongue” closes with a melancholic swan song that subconsciously throws listeners back into the loop with its open-ended conclusion.
