In the eighty-fifth episode of The Just Checking In Podcast, we checked in with fine artist Sophie Green.
Sophie is a conservation & wildlife artist, who specialises in capturing the photorealistic details of animals and their surroundings. Sophie has dedicated her time and artistic work to raising awareness for issues surrounding animal welfare and the environment.
Sophie donates 10% of her profits to wildlife & conservation charities and has worked closely with foundations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Explorers Against Extinction (The Real World Conservation Trust).
Sophie was the winner of the Leisure Painter People's Choice Award 2020 and was shortlisted for prizes such as the Sketch for Survival Award, the DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year competition and the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize.
In this episode we discuss her artistic journey, dealing with artist’s block, how her videos contain an ASMR element that help her followers, why she is so passionate about wildlife conservation, work-life balance and taking the plunge to become an artist full-time.
For some of her childhood, Sophie lived with a Speech and Language Communication Need and anxiety disorder called Selective Mutism. This affected her during nursery and some of her primary school years and could have had a big impact on her education and mental health if she hadn’t overcome it.
Grief is also on the menu as Sophie lost her mother when she was 19 years old. We talk about how that affected her mental health as an adult and how her way of processing that trauma left huge gaps in her memory.
As always, #itsokaytovent
