'Better Days' was one of my first forays into deep house music! I remember this because I (very creatively) titled the track 'New Beginnings'. For the longest time, 'Better Days' was a bit chaotic – there was a lot of reverb, echoes and compression, but I liked the way it sounded.
The idea of 'New Beginnings' was twofold for me. I completed this track in early 2020, which coincided with my moving to Melbourne to study my Master's degree. I remember my first day in Melbourne, recording everything to use as footage for the music video; alas, it never came to be seeing as how I ended up in and out of lockdown for two years.
The title reflects that. We're in better days now. When I was in it, it didn't feel like there were any better days. It didn't feel like new beginnings. To be honest, it didn't feel like anything at all. But you realise, usually after the fact, that it's temporary. Better days are always ahead.
The photo for 'Better Days' is from Federation Square, and is a picture of one of the steeples of Southern Cross Station. It was on a day where I was out with a friend of mine, walking and talking – it doesn't sound like much, but there was joy and laughter and stupid fun. Simple things. Things that reminded me that, yes, we are in better days now.
