All sounds originate with the sample, which was manipulated twice.
The repetitive machine noise that kicks in at 1:00 is made by squeezing the entire sample down to 2 seconds in length and appending it to itself in reverse, then cloning over and over and treating the result with delay and reverb.
All other drones are made from a 2 second sample of just one of the air conditioner’s rasping metallic squeals. That sample was then stretched, pitch changed, cut up, reversed and otherwise messed with. I sort of lost track…
The crackling artefacts at the beginning and end are the result of an accident that I like to think of as an experiment. I was trying out a previously unused Audacity plugin on a short drone section. I’m not sure it’s supposed to make these sounds, but I’m glad it does.
