Description

Where to start? I assemble all my tracks in Audacity on my 15 year old PC and use every effect I touch way too much. For this one I picked reverb (specifically a plugin called Ambient Chamber on its “Space” setting), delay (always used irresponsibly and to excess), Paulstretch and Tempo Change.

I stacked several of my recent tracks together and used all the above effects on them to varying degrees. (Bear in mind, most of these were excessive to start with.)

Then I cut bits out, tempo-stretched them and used delay and a couple of other effects to get all the distorted disturbance - the crunchy bits - towards the end. In the spirit of the exercise, I tried to do this to excess, but may have fallen short…

Is this “a piece of music”? Discuss.

The Assignment: Do something you do too much even more.

Step 1: Think about something in your music that you feel like you do too often.

Step 2: Make a piece of music in which you double down on what you focused on in Step 1. Own it. Turn a crutch into a superpower.
