Disquiet Junto Project 0178: Berlin Bells

War Bells [disquiet0178-sepulchrabells]

I took a short sample from the quietest section of the recording, where the bells are clearest. This was stretched four times to about 3:58, once using Audacity and three times in Paulstretch at different tonalities and harmonic settings. These were overlaid and mixed.

The sample was also interfered with using ambient v.3 – a short excerpt from this was laid down several times in different keys and using varying amounts of delay, providing the atmospherics towards the end. (The full length granular improv was used – and further abused – to make https://soundcloud.com/tuonela-1/you-can-tell-them-by-their-facial-rivets-and-their-tears-of-molten-glass )

Image: During WW2, incendiary bombs caused a firestorm that engulfed St. Marien's church on Palm Sunday, 1942. Two bells fell to the ground, and the smashed bells were left in place as a memorial. In previous wars, the bells had been melted down and made into weapons.

Emphasize the bells in an urban field recording.

Step 1: Download the audio file at this URL. It is a field recording of urban Berlin by Michael Raphael (aka Sepulchra):

Step 2: Rework the source audio in a manner that reinforces the melodic component of the bells. Beyond that sole instruction, the choices are up to you.

Step 3: Upload your track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.
