Episode 40 features a chat with the documentary filmmaker Sampson Collins.
Sampson's debut film was the independent feature documentary ‘Death of a Gentleman’, which investigated corruption in the administration of world cricket. Sampson produced, co-directed and narrated the film, which was released in UK cinemas in 2015, won a Sports Journalism Award in 2016, and helped change policy at the International Cricket Council. The film was sold to Netflix worldwide.
Sampson then went on to produce the two-part documentary series ‘GAZZA’; which examines the life and career of the footballer, Paul Gascoigne. The series is essentially a modern history of British tabloid culture told through the destruction of a sporting icon, which screened in April 2022 and was seen by over 2 million viewers on BBC Two and iPlayer. 'GAZZA' went on to win the award for ‘Best Documentary Series’ at the 2023 Royal Television Society Awards and was shortlisted for Best Series and nominated for Best Sports Documentary for the 2022 Grierson Documentary Awards.
This year (2024) saw the release of Sampson's Amazon Prime docuseries ‘99’ – the definitive story of Manchester United’s 1999 treble-winning season. The films feature archival footage as well as new interviews with the 1999 Treble Winning Manchester United Squad, as well as with the Manager and Coaching Staff.
