Description

Welcome to episode 112 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 18 January 2023] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert, Vanessa Gilmartin & David Munday spoke with guest Leanne Howlett about her journey into mental health nursing.

LH - I initially trained as a Solicitor after leaving school and spent 7 years working as a private client solicitor specialising in wills, probate and lasting powers of attorney. After experiencing postnatal depression following the birth of my eldest son 6 and a half years ago I developed a passion for supporting parents with their mental health in pregnancy and after having a baby. I set up a charity ‘By Your Side’ in early 2018 providing peer support to parents experiencing perinatal mental illness and raising awareness of it.
After becoming seriously unwell after having my daughter 3 years ago I decided I wanted to pursue my passion for perinatal mental illness as a career and after returning from maternity leave I quit my career and returned to university to study mental health nursing. I am now in my third year and have just secured a job as a staff nurse at my local Mother and Baby Unit for when I qualify in the summer.
