Welcome to episode 146 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 13 December 2023] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert and Dave Munday spoke with guest Jane Beach and reflected on #mhTV in 2023. We used the medium of NMC Revalidation to do this as both a refresher for those who have gone through NMC revalidation before and for those newly qualified colleagues who have yet to go through the process for the first time.
JB - During a 32-year career in the NHS, Jane worked in locations throughout the UK as a nurse and midwife. She subsequently qualified as a health visitor, a role she enjoyed for over 16 years working in Birmingham. Participation in a research project concerned with using the Edinburgh Post Natal Depression Scale in practice motivated Jane to undertake a degree in health sciences. Her positive experience of academia encouraged her to continue onto to obtain a Master’s in Public Health, cementing her passion for public health. She moved into smoking cessation, progressing to leadership of the service before securing a role within a PCT public health team, where she was a nurse consultant within the health improvement team.
Jane decided to leave the NHS when PCTs were dissolved. She secured a role at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as the health visiting adviser and developed a keen interest in healthcare regulation. In October 2012, Jane joined the Unite Health Sector as the lead professional officer for regulation, a role that enables her to maintain close links with her professional roots. Jane’s work in regulation has included the review of the NMC Code, revalidation and changes to fitness to practise. Healthcare regulation is constantly changing and Jane is kept busy ensuring Unite members are kept up to date with developments and are supported to practice safely and effectively.
