Description

Welcome to episode 45 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 7 April 2021] of #mhTV. In this episode of #mhTV, Nicky Lambert and Dave Munday were supposed to speak with guest Jane Anderson, the winner of the 2021 BJN Mental Health Nurse of the Year Award. Due to internet problems, instead Nicky and Dave had a conversation about a number of current issues. We hope to get Jane on a future episode of #mhTV!

The conversation included:
- The report of the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/974507/20210331_-_CRED_Report_-_FINAL_-_Web_Accessible.pdf. We referenced the response from the Centre for Mental Health, 'Race Disparity Commission report falls far short of offering solutions for equality in mental health and life chances in Britain', which can be read here: https://www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/news/race-disparity-commission-report-falls-far-short-mental-health. We also talked about attempts to generate 'culture wars' and referenced our recent #mhTV with Natasha Devon where this was discussed. You can watch this episode here: https://youtu.be/EBqyn5UkZbg.
- Work done by Middlesex University on racism including 'Nurses call for an end to ‘hair racism’ in the NHS', which can be read about here: https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/research-and-innovation/exclusive-nurses-call-for-an-end-to-hair-racism-in-the-nhs-07-04-2021/.
- Announcements from the government this week launching two new types of 'hubs'; Mental health "hubs" for new, expectant or bereaved mothers https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56639858, and; 'school behaviour hubs' https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2021/04/06/nothing-dickensian-classroom-well-ordered-disciplined-environment/. Dave highlighted a few links (https://twitter.com/davidamunday/status/1379334821219086341?s=20 and https://twitter.com/davidamunday/status/1379807149665173505?s=20). In this segment we also mentioned a previous #mhTV episode on sexual safety which can be rewatched here: https://youtu.be/cVIrvuPiiTQ.
- NHS pay. You can read more about this from Unite the union here: https://www.unitetheunion.org/campaigns/nhs-workers-deserve-a-pay-rise-now/.
- The Nursing and Midwifery Council's consultation on standards for community nursing specialist practice qualifications and standards for post registration programmes. These will be launched today and will be available to look at on the NMC website: https://www.nmc.org.uk/.
