Welcome to episode 51 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 2 June 2021] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert and Dave Munday spoke with guests Georgie Cox and Sheila Sobrany about hair racism.
Georgie Cox is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Middlesex University. She is recently elected to the role of UCU Equalities officer for the Middlesex Branch. During her career she has demonstrated a commitment and passion for race equality, diversity and inclusion by tackling inequalities in nursing, for all nursing staff and nursing students. She is passionate for nurses rights to a significant pay rise, career progression, and nurse education. Georgie currently co-chairs several networks at Middlesex University three within the Nursing department to helping address the awarding gap with nursing students, the Healthcare Academics Race Equality Diversity and Inclusivity Network& Strategic Advisory Group (HAREDIN & SAG) a sister Network for the Student section (SHAREDIN) as well as the HAREDIN student Alumni network. As part of her work she Co-Chairs on the Middlesex University Anti-Racism Network and is currently working with colleagues on the EDI in the curriculum project as well as being a member of the SAT (self assessment team) for the Race Equality Charter submission for the university. Georgie is also a member of the London Higher tackling Racism Action Group reviewing key performance indicators, within the London university sector.
Sheila Sobrany is a Nursing Lecturer at Middlesex University.
Her career has been of demonstrable commitment and passion for race equality, diversity and inclusion by tackling inequalities in nursing, for all nursing staff and nursing students. She is passionate for our nurses right to a significant pay rise, career progression, and nurse education. She is a long-standing member of the Chief Nursing Officer’s Black Minority and Ethnic Strategic Advisory Group (CNO BME SAG), and is an elected member of the Royal College of Nursing London Region board. Sheila chairs three networks at Middlesex University for Academic Healthcare staff, nursing students and Alumni nurses the Healthcare Academics Race Equality Diversity and Inclusivity Networks Strategic Advisory Group (HAREDIN & SAG and SHAREDIN). She also Co-Chairs on the Middlesex University Anti-Racism Network. In 2019 she travelled to Ghana as part of the Global Health Lecturer Volunteer Fellows to teach nursing and midwifery students in Ghana for 5 days. This was a life changing academic experience.
