The Sound Wandering Bee (2016) by James Barrett
A microphone was placed in a hive. The sound it gathered is the background to this fabulous journey through the auditory world of the bee over a day. The didgeridoo represents the narrating bee, the subject experiencing, the bridge for the listener and the spirit of the work. The sounds of the Australian bush (morning), Kalimantan (midday) and Europe (night) are interspersed with trance Yidaki, weather sounds, bells, tambura, animals, birds and spoken word pieces on the nature of work ("The Decline and Fall of Work" by Raoul Vaneigem and Shakespeare's Henry V: Act 1, Scene 2 on 'kingdom of the bees' for the life of the bee is a life of work). This is an attempt to represent in metaphor and sound the ability of collective transcendence to change reality. Yoga (union) and Shamanism inform the work.
