Been a while since the last Meet the Locals podcast, but we're back with episode #078, featuring a solid hour of grooves from a new arrival to the Washington DC house music community, Stu Kelly. Over to Stu for a few words about the mix:
"Having just moved here from Australia, I was without my decks for almost 3 months while they (painfully slowly) made their way on a container by sea. AHHH! So let’s just say they’ve received a lot of attention from me since they’ve arrived :D I’ve been playing for a loooong time. Grew up in Dublin, Ireland where I first fell in love with DJing. Originally a techno DJ, as that was the dominant sound in Dublin at the time, I moved to Sydney in 1999 and noticed my sound evolve to a more house and particularly deep house center of gravity. Playing with really talented selectors over the years has further opened my ears and I’ve continued to incorporate more varied sounds from funk and disco to electronica and broken beat to my sets. I also think hosting a House music radio show for almost 7 years has taught me to be more freestyle with my track selections while never losing sight of the importance of flow to an audience. Whenever I put a mix together, my goal starting out is to make it interesting. I’m not really a set planner. I do take note of things that work whether it’s a particular 1+1=3 blend between tracks or an opportunity to shift the mood in a surprising way. Not necessarily looking for jarring, sharp turns but maybe something more like a new, surprising view coming into focus as you round a corner.
This mix has a bit of that going on, I think. Playing around with varied beat structures and moods. Some party tune moments and some deeper, more introspective vibes too. As far as planning for this one went, there were a few tracks I knew I wanted in there and I just kind of felt the rest as I was playing. I hope it turned out well. I’m pumped to be living here now and looking forward to sharing a dance floor real soon!"
Look out for Stu Kelly spinning out and about in Washington DC in the not too distant future.
