Two weeks ago we were in Lisbon when out of thin air this beautiful girl appears around a corner trying hard to scare me. Screaming and making faces and everything. I stopped walking and she bursts into laughter. She laughed so damn hard about her own silly joke. It was weird and weirdly enchanting to see. She even pointed her finger at me going: “haha, I got you!”. Tears were rolling over her cheeks as she walked wall to wall down the half-lit stairs somewhere down to the river. Then, she looked at me one more time and like she came, she disappeared into the night.
Later that night we ended up in a club near the river where we saw a really nice improv band. They played somewhat experiential crossover jazz build-ups in their tracks. Interesting to listen to and I closed my eyes for a moment. Unwillingly I turned around and there she was. The same girl again walking up to me with two drinks in her hands. She looked at me and thought back to the moment earlier that evening. A big smile returned to her gentle face. She approached me again. Only this time less abrupt.
Geju (@g-e-j-u) started playing. The Portuguese temperament and their hypnotic themes began to melt. The music sparked something in the room. The volume went up just enough for everyone to get dragged in. There was but one thing to do. And in all honesty, it was one of those rare nights where literally all you do is dance. It was great. People liked what they heard. Even though they didn’t really know, where these slow, upbeat rhythms were heading for.
The clock went forward an hour that night into the summer, but here on the dance floor, everything seemed to move independently of time outside. Slowly, but surely the first couldn’t hold it in anymore and a few warily whistles could be heard. After that, the place started to catch a mild fire and cheers and whistles became louder and louder. From that point onward the crowd was sold. This strange downtempo worldly beat took everyone on an unexpected trip into this slow cathartic build-up. I’m giving it to GEJU as the prime catalyst. They knew very well what they were doing there and why. That turned into inspiration and that inspiration turned into this.
