Ego: a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance. The common wisdom is to keep your ego in check so as not to offend other or overstep your boundaries - don't outkick your coverage, as the saying goes.
I disagree. I think your ego should be completely out of control. Yes - out of control.
You're much more likely to die from a lack of ambition than from having too much of it. Look at your own life - have you gone too far or not gone far enough?
