The Philadelphia 76ers weren’t very good. They tried to win, but weren’t winning enough to be close to title-contender status. To win in the NBA you need superstar-level talent. The Sixers didn’t have it.
The only way to obtain such talent was through free agency or the draft. Philadelphia wasn’t a prime free agent destination. And the only way to get the best draft talent was to have high draft picks. High draft picks went to the worst-performing teams.

The Sixers started losing. A lot. Year after year. They called it “The Process.” They stockpiled high draft picks and hope some of those players would blossom into stars. They told Philadelphia fans to “Trust The Process.” It worked. They’re actually pretty good now, with (for now) two superstar talents.
