Jeremiah the Prophet had warned the inhabitants of Jerusalem to turn away from idolatry, neglect of God's Word, and immorality - or, God would remove His protection from their city. Despite Jeremiah trying for decades to have the leaders of Jerusalem repent, they stubbornly refused to, and ended up paying a terrible price.
