Description

Christo was a Bulgarian-born artist known for his monumental environmental artworks created in collaboration with his wife, Jeanne-Claude. Born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in 1935, he rose to prominence in the 1960s for his large-scale, temporary installations, such as "The Gates" in New York City's Central Park and "Wrapped Reichstag" in Berlin. Christo's works often involved wrapping or draping existing structures or landscapes in fabric, transforming familiar landmarks into surreal and thought-provoking experiences. He and Jeanne-Claude financed their projects entirely through the sale of Christo's original artwork, never accepting sponsorships. Christo's artistic vision and commitment to artistic freedom have left an indelible mark on the world of contemporary art. He passed away in 2020, but his legacy continues to inspire artists and audiences globally.
