Text: Psalm 103
Opening Statement:
Through the death of Christ, the barrier between us and relationship with God was torn in two. The wrath of God was satisfied with Jesus’ death, and now we can experience the full depth of his love.
I) The Descriptive Power of God's Love (vv. 8, 11, 13, 17)
The Psalmist reminds us that God loves you simply because he loves you. You don’t have to work for his affection. You don’t have to set yourself straight before God can pour out his love over you. He longs to love you right where you are, as you are. He longs to fill you with love to overflowing.
II) The Definition of God's Love (v. 2)
Love is one of God’s attributes. An attribute is a characteristic of God’s nature that has always been and always will be. For instance:
A) God is holy, just, righteous, and pure
These are what might be called God’s ‘Moral Attributes.’
B) God is eternal, unchanging, self-sufficient
The Bible says that no one made God. God always has been, and God always will be.
C) God is merciful, kind, gracious and loving
Love flows from God because God is love. God not only loves, God is love. Everything that God does flows from His love.
III) The Benefits of God's Love (v. 2)
The Psalmist uncovers all the phases of life that God's love has touched and in turn benefited and blessed the recipient.
A) Spiritually (v. 3, 12)
B) Emotionally (v. 3)
C) Eternally (v. 4)
D) Physically (v. 5)
E) Judicially (v. 6)
IV) Knowing the Blessings of God's Love
A) God's love is all consuming
God's love touches every part of our life. Nothing - no calling or circumstance, no adversity or advancement, no pain or promotion, no status or station - escapes the brush strokes of God's love. God's love bleeds into every fabric and fiber of our lives.
B) God's love is personal
The Bible cuts through all the philosophical abstractions and declares that God is a Person. As a personal being God is capable of loving and being loved. And as a personal being he loves each one of us intensely personally.
When God says I love you, he is saying that you matter to him. You are a person of worth. You are valuable to him.
C) God's love is beyond human comprehension (vv. 13-14)
Like a father's love for a wayward and rebellious son that waits anxiously for him to return home so he can grant him a new start, is God's love for us. It is beyond comprehension.
In Closing:
If you ever wonder if God loves you look to the cross. The cross is God's way of saying, "I love you this much," with his arms outstretched. God's final words to us are etched on a Roman cross. They are blood red. They scream to be heard. They say, "I love you."
