Many people know this traditional folk song from military funerals, ceremonies, Irish culture, etc. While I am in fact not Irish (but do have some Scottish in me, I think), I of course recognize why this and folk songs in general have such longevity. I was inspired to put my stamp on this classic after hearing Sinéad O'Connor's stark and moving a capella rendition from the Late Late Show on YouTube. I'm accompanying myself on my Taylor 214ce electric acoustic guitar.
Lyrics:
Oh Danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountain side
The summer's gone and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
And I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny Boy I love you so
And when you come and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I may well be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an Ave there for me
And I shall hear though soft your tread above me
And all my grave will warmer sweeter be
And you will bend and tell me that you love me
Then I will sleep in peace until you come to me
