Description

Author of "The Twentieth Year: A Memoir of Miscarriage", Maureen Pollard interviews Charlotte about her experience of losing her son to stillbirth at 5 months into her pregnancy. This came after she had a previous miscarriage, which made it even harder to bear the disappointment and sorrow - especially as a woman attempting to have a child without a partner. Charlotte talks about how hard it was to return to work only 10 days after her son's death with barely any time to process what had happened. They also discuss how having amazing midwives by her side during and after was so important; how they encouraged her to hold her son in her arms and gave her space to cry and create a sacred connection with him. This allowed her to honour and respect him, and taught her that she needed to grieve in order to be healthy - "up until that event, I had always had some kind of unconscious belief that grieving or sadness was a weakness, or it was kind of.. inappropriate."
