R' Shlomo Carlebach z'l - To Give More
How do you know how much you love somebody? If a person will call me up and ask me for a loan of a hundred dollars, I will give them one hundred dollars. If my little girl asks me for ten dollars, I’ll give her eleven because I want her to have more than what she asked for.
When you love somebody very much you want to give them more. So Reb Nachman says that the highest level I can reach during the week is that G-d answers my prayer and really gives me what I need. This is a very high level, I wish we would be on that level. I wish we would be on the level that whenever we pray, G-d really answers us. But do you know where we reach on Shabbos? Not only does G-d answer me, G-d gives me more than I asked for.
This is what Shabbos is all about. On Shabbos we have ‘mishne lechem’, two loaves of bread. In Hebrew “Mishne” doesn’t necessarily mean ‘double.’ Mishne means more, more than one.
Here I want you to understand something very deep. What does it mean to have peace with someone? Peace doesn’t mean I give you what you ask for, for that you don’t need peace. Peace means I want to give you more than what you asked.
