Matthew 8 and 9 focus on Jesus’ authority. In chapter eight, Matthew revealed Jesus’ authority over disease (cf. 8:1-17), discipleship (cf. 8:18-22), and Creation (cf. 8:23-27). In each encounter, Matthew demonstrates that Jesus’ authority proves He is the Messianic King and the God-Man. Neither uncleanness, prejudice, manufactured traditions, cultural customs, personal prosperity, nor Creation has more authority than Jesus. Now in Matthew 8:28-34, Jesus’ authority over demons is presented.
