Psalm 88 is the saddest psalm of the Hebrew Psalter. It is the diligent prayer of the suffering. The psalmist, Heman the Ezrahite laments the constant affliction from which he suffers. From his point of view, he is knocking on deaths’ door. Hence, he does the only thing that can possibly bring relief and peace. He prays days and night to YHWH.
