Description

Matthew 10:5 states that Jesus sent the twelve out “after instructing them.” The verb instructing (parangellō) is a unique verb that has several connotations. It is a military term describing the command of an officer to those under his command. It is a legal term used to subpoena someone to appear in court. It is an ethical term used to refer to a binding moral obligation. There is a requirement to obey the instruction or command in each of the usages of the verb. Therefore, having commissioned, certified, and confirmed the disciples as servants, Jesus now commands the apostles what to do. In doing so, Jesus lays out the tasks of Kingdom servants in Matthew 10:5-15. Servants must perform the task commanded of them by their King!
