Jacob Butler, who founded Brisbane buyer's agency Hunter Gather in 2020, has an interesting take on being a business owner.
Depending on your situation, it may actually be less risky than being an employee, as he explains to Buyer’s Agent Institute founder Ben Handler.
Previously, Jacob worked as a commission-only buyer's agent for another company. When he founded his business, he was still commission-only – but now he had the chance to follow his own plan, rather than someone else's.
Even though he launched the business during the pandemic, he was busy from the start, as he was able to get referrals from his network and former clients.
Jacob loves being a business owner, but points out that people need to be realistic about the amount of hard work and stress it involves.
Hunter Gather has been "purposefully slow to grow", Jacob says.
"There's five of us at the moment, there may be another two to four people in the next 12 months, but the goal isn't to be the biggest buyer’s agent in Brisbane or the biggest buyer’s agent in Australia. It really is about having the right people in the right seats on the bus essentially,” he says.
