It's part two of Dan's love-fest for jazz drummer and bandleader Art Blakey! This time we're talking about the timeline of Blakey's life and how he was woven into the timeline of jazz as a genre.
NOTES / DON'T @ US:
- Yes, it was Cab Calloway’s band that Dizzy Gillespie was kicked out of. Dan had heard it was because he got up and danced during shows, but apparently he stabbed Calloway in the leg during a rehearsal, which seems like much stronger grounds for dismissal.
- Dan misnamed Ornette Coleman’s album “The Shape of Jazz to Come” as “The Sound of Jazz Yet to Come”. He has been fired.
- No, Dan, Curtis Fuller didn’t write “Free For All”. Wayne Shorter did. Idiot.
