This week, we are ranting and raving about Mike Patton, one of the most diverse musicians around. We start with his 80s and 90s bands Mr. Bungle and Faith No More as well as his solo stuff and go into the more project-y projects like Fantômas, Tomahawk, Mondo Cane, and Peeping Tom. We also touch on his many, many collaborations, mentioning almost 1/10th of them! Patton can growl, croon, yelp, scream, and rock. We're big fans of not just his music, but also of his approach to creativity and craft.
If you liked Tomahawk’s first record, check out their new one. If you dug Lovage, check out Peeping Tom or Patton’s 2019 record with Jean-Claude Vannier (Serge Gainsbourg collaborator), “Corpse Flower”. If you liked Dillinger Escape Plan or “Angel Dust”, check out Dead Cross. One awesome project is his recent work with Anthony Pateras as tētēma. The general style is discordant electronic world music, like Peter Gabriel working with John Zorn. Really cool stuff!
And scroll through Ipecac’s catalog. There’s a ton of amazing non-Patton folks making loud or weird or gorgeous or just plain rad music there, like JG Thirlwell, Le Butcherettes, Farmers Market, Eyvind Kang, Zu, Messer Chups, and on and on and on. So be like me and listen to every record there that you haven’t heard and then dedicate the rest of 2021’s paychecks to getting them! https://ipecacrecordings.bandcamp.com
NOTES / DON'T @ US:
- “The Real Thing” was Faith No More’s 3rd album, not 2nd.
- Eureka, Ca is not in the Bay Area 😬.
- Patton’s hand is numb from breaking glass on stage, not from falling on his back.
- We confirmed that no, Mike Patton and Giorgio Moroder never worked together
- We didn’t mention his gas mask vocals on Tomahawk’s first record! Dang it! He sang through a gas mask. It was super cool. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/0aA5NxTujqg
- As we said in the show, you've gotta buy these albums and listen to them 1000 times.
