This week, we're closing out our trilogy of Old Weirdos with the Argentine-German composer Mauricio Kagel. Kagel's work is a combination of impressive musicality, performance art, and pantomime. Kagel’s pieces can be really funny, quite serious, or just plain weird. We dive into it (in the shallow end, though, as we only just found out about him recently) and tie him into the traditions of nontraditional artforms. It was a lot fo fun!
NOTES / DON'T @ US:
- We most likely used the word "dada" wrong. We go into some depth about our intellectual failings in this matter, so we've got it covered. Dan just finished a fascinating book by Sue Roe about the Dada and Surrealist artists called "In Montparnasse", the follow-up to her book "In Montmarte" about the cubists and modernists. They're stupendous books and it turns out almost everybody involved is insufferable!
- The samples of "Rrrrrr" came from this performance by Bruno Lo Bianco (Argentina)and Sebastián Pereira (Uruguay): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c30y0ROrK-I
- The samples from "Match" came from this performance by Michael Unterman and Jan Mueller-Szeraws (cello) and I-Jen Fang (percussion):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYW8SWzEOwE
- Samples used sparingly for critical purposes under Fair Use. Please support any performers you get a chance to see, especially if it’s something by an amazing weirdo like Mauricio Kagel!
