The Book of Exodus begins with G-d counting Jacob and his family who came to Egypt.
However, G-d already counted the same family of 70 members in the Book of Genesis, when it tells of how Jacob and his family joined Joseph in Egypt!
Why does G-d count them twice, when they were alive and came to Egypt, and then again after they died in Egypt?
"To show how precious we are to G-d, as the verse states, ‘who takes out their host by number; all of them He calls by name (Isaiah 40;20).'" -Rashi Exodus 1:1
