__One of the greatest quandaries of faith is the peaceful co-existence of Histadlut (Effort) and Bitochon (Faith; Trust). To my grandmother, of blessed memory, this wasn’t a quandary at all. For her, it was all summed up in, “G-d says, ‘Do!’ and I will help you!” Ah… The beautiful simplicity of the faith of yesteryear… However, in my complicated, and sometimes even self-destructive, mind, it isn’t so simple at all, ever. The You and the I tug-a-war between G-d and myself, where G-d ends, and I begin, in our relationship, where the responsibility in self-reliance of Hishtadlut ends and where the entitlement of Bitochon begins, and frankly, where does the accountability of Hishtadlut end, and where does the accusatory victimhood of Bitachon begin.

And all of this, because of a perverse understanding of both, Histadlut and Bitachon. Hishtadlut has nothing to do with self-reliance, and Bitochon has nothing to do with neither entitlement, nor is it an excuse for victimhood. And yes, G-d does say, “Do, and I will help you,” but in a far deeper sense than it may read. In the deepest sense, the truth of effort, freedom of choice, faith, and trust in G-d all coexist and are mutually inclusive.

In this lecture we are going to explore the flow and dance between G-d commanding us, “I shall be sanctified amidst the children of Israel,” the work of our Hishtadlut, and the, “I am the Lord Who sanctifies you,” our Bitochon in G-d’s doing.

This lecture is based primarily on a maamor the Rebbe delivered on this Shabbat in 1965, exploring the three crowns of G-d.
