For our modern-day let us take a deeper view into what Torah is all about. Torah, for many, is seen as the constitution of the Jewish religion. In other words, Torah is seen as a religion, filled with obligations and prohibitions, which ultimately govern whether will go to Heaven or to Hell. However, in Chassidus teachings, this isn’t so. Torah is G-d’s ultimate gift to the Jewish people. The gift behind this gift is that the Torah offers a connection and a relationship with G-d. And thus our sages (-Shemot Rabbah Portion 30:9) teach us on the verse (-Psalms 147:19), “He tells His words to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel,” that, “The Holy One, blessed be He, what He does, He tells Israel to do and to heed.” Torah is the wisdom and will of G-d, through which G-d behaves, creates and relates to His universe, and thus, Torah is the bridge through which we become one with G-d in our intellect, emotions, thoughts, speech and actions. Which leads us into the topic of spirituality.
Spirituality, ultimately is a binary code. The binary code is simply (i) G-d, and (b) Ego. Now, before I continue, it is important to emphasize is that Spirituality, in being a Binary Code, is not Black and White! There is an infinite spread of levels in the ratio within us of what percent of us is about G-d, and what percent of us is about Ego. In any and every intention that we have to any given action that we do, there is this infinite levels of ratios. To embrace this is to accept our humanity, and the journey of growth that we are meant to embrace.
This lecture is going to explore the Spirituality of Torah, in levels upon levels. The modern-day issue of this lecture will then answer is how embrace this on a practical level.
This lecture is based primarily on a maamor that the Rebbe delivered on this Shabbat, in 1969, exploring the mystical teachings of the Jews arriving at Mount Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Sivan.
