Our sages teach us over and over again, “The descent is for the need of the ascent!”

Every pain, every suffering, and every destruction, is but the groundbreaking to a, “Greater will be this house than the first house.”

Yet, the destruction hurts, hurts terribly, to the point of the promise that an ascent is evolving, is so distant, not affording us any consolation, comfort or empowerment at all.

Just this Thursday we mourned over the destruction of the Holy Temples, Jerusalem, and an exile that has been lasting for almost 2,000 years! And exile of persecution, exterminations, and humiliation. G-d, how are we to survive this all?!

This lecture is based primarily on two maamorim the Rebbe delivered, one on last Shabbat and one on this Shabbat in 1969, exploring the spiritual dimension of consolation that G-d is giving us, in our mourning over the destruction of the first and second Holy Temple.
